
Key Application Scenarios & Painting Requirements
Normal atmospheric environments (rural, urban, mild suburban areas)
No surface painting is needed at all. SPA-C will naturally form a uniform and compact patina within 1-3 years of outdoor exposure, which effectively resists general moisture, oxygen and mild dust erosion. Bare use in these environments not only ensures structural corrosion resistance but also retains the unique natural aesthetic of weathering steel.
Mild industrial/light coastal environments (low salt spray, low sulfur dioxide concentration)
Painting is still unnecessary for structural protection. To promote faster and more even patina formation, only simple measures such as ensuring good structural drainage and ventilation (avoiding long-term water accumulation) or light sandblasting pretreatment are needed, instead of painting. Bare use remains the optimal choice here for cost and maintenance efficiency.

Harsh outdoor environments (severe coastal with high salt spray, heavy industrial areas with high pollution, humid and rainy areas with persistent dampness)
Surface painting or a transparent breathable sealer is highly recommended (though not absolute). In these environments, high concentrations of chloride ions, acid mist or prolonged wetness can slow natural patina formation or cause uneven early rusting; a protective paint layer or sealer can stabilize the steel surface in the early stage, block the erosion of corrosive media, and help the patina form stably over time, extending the steel's service life.
Special functional/aesthetic outdoor needs
Painting may be adopted for non-corrosion-resistant purposes, such as preventing early rust runoff from staining adjacent building materials, accelerating uniform patina formation with a patina accelerator (instead of traditional paint), or applying a clear sealer to fix the patina's appearance. This type of coating is optional and not required for the steel's basic structural corrosion protection.
