Advantages of Corten Steel Plate
Durability
Corten steel plates are designed to deliver exceptional durability and long service life in harsh outdoor environments. They can withstand extreme temperatures, heavy rain, and strong winds. The naturally formed protective rust layer acts as a barrier against further corrosion, ensuring reliable performance over time.
Low maintenance
One of the biggest advantages of corten steel plates is their low maintenance requirement. Unlike traditional steel, they do not require painting or coating. This significantly reduces long-term maintenance costs, making them a cost-effective solution for construction and landscape projects.
Versatility
Corten steel plates are available in a wide range of sizes and thicknesses. They can be easily cut, welded, and formed into different shapes to meet specific project needs. This makes them ideal for custom architectural designs and functional landscape applications.
Environmentally friendly
Corten steel is a sustainable material made from recyclable resources. Its long lifespan and low maintenance requirements help reduce material waste and environmental impact, making it a smart choice for eco-conscious projects.
Unique appearance
Corten steel develops a distinctive rust-like patina over time, creating a natural and visually striking appearance. This evolving surface adds character and artistic value, making it highly popular in architectural and landscape design.
Hot-rolled weathering steel plate
The surface is red with iron oxide scale, with a roughness of Ra ≥ 6.3μm. Production costs are low, 10%-15% lower than cold-rolled plate.
Cold-rolled weathering steel plate
The surface is smooth, with a roughness of Ra ≤ 3.2μm, and can be processed through secondary processes such as galvanizing and painting. The rust layer is more uniform than that of hot-rolled plate, providing a superior decorative effect.
Weathering steel strip
Excellent processability allows for the manufacture of complex shapes such as corrugated sheet and profiled sheet. Its unit weight is light, 30%-40% lighter than that of hot-rolled plate.

Applications of Corten Steel Plate
Roofing: Strong and attractive corrugated Corten steel roofing that develops a characterful aged appearance over time.
Gardens: Perfect for planters and raised beds, lending a rustic and organic feel to outdoor areas.
Doors: Decorative rusted cladding for doors, suitable for indoor and outdoor use to create a bold visual feature.
Signage: Custom wall pieces and rusted corten steel signs that make a lasting impression.
Interiors: Blackened steel finishes bring a modern and refined edge to interior design.
Public art and architecture: Structural grades of Corten steel have been used in landmark works such as The Angel of the North.
Process Of Corten Steel
Corten steel is produced in large steel mills. The alloy is cast into billets, which are then hot-rolled into plates, sheets, or coils, depending on the required form.
Corten steel is cut, welded, and fabricated using weathering steel-compatible techniques to maintain its corrosion resistance.
Preheating and post-weld treatment are essential to minimize the risk of cracking in Corten steel. Additionally, using the correct filler material ensures the welded joints maintain the alloy composition and corrosion resistance.
For cutting, techniques like oxygen-acetylene cutting, plasma cutting, and laser cutting are used, followed by edge finishing to ensure smooth surfaces that promote uniform development of the protective patina.
Exposure to moisture and oxygen triggers the formation of a protective, reddish-brown oxide layer that prevents further corrosion.
To speed up the rusting process, surface treatments like acid washes, saltwater sprays, or humidity chambers can be used. These techniques can help achieve a full patina in a shorter period.
After patina formation, a final inspection is done, and optional protective coatings may be applied to enhance durability in harsh environments.
The steel is delivered, installed, and continues to develop its patina, providing a long-lasting, visually unique appearance.
Weathering Steel Sheet Maintenance
Moisture Prevention and Ventilation
Avoid moisture accumulation: Install ventilation gaps beneath sculptures or behind curtain walls to ensure air circulation and prevent rainwater accumulation. For example, a 50-100mm ventilation gap should be reserved during curtain wall design to improve the thermal performance of the wall and accelerate the drying of the steel sheets.
Adapting to Extreme Environments: In areas with maritime climates or severe industrial pollution, the maintenance cycle should be shortened to once a year, with a focus on checking the chloride ion deposition rate (recommended ≤50mg/(m²·d)) and the stability of the rust layer.
Preventing Mechanical Damage
Handle with care: Avoid bumping or scratching the steel sheet surface when moving steel components to prevent damage to the rust layer or substrate.
Preventing prolonged pressure: Remove steel components promptly after use to prevent deformation caused by prolonged pressure (for example, roadbed boxes require regular rotation during use).
