The elongation of ASTM A606‑2 weathering steel is specified under ASTM A606/A606M and depends slightly on thickness and delivery condition, but it maintains a minimum standard value to ensure good formability, bending, and weldability for thin‑sheet structural and landscape applications.
Typical Elongation Values
All values are based on a 50 mm (2‑inch) gauge length, which is the standard for this grade:
Hot‑rolled sheet/plate (as‑rolled)
Minimum yield strength: 345 MPa (50 ksi)
Tensile strength: 480 MPa (70 ksi)
Minimum elongation: 22%
Hot‑rolled annealed / normalized
Minimum yield strength: 310 MPa (45 ksi)
Tensile strength: 450 MPa (65 ksi)
Minimum elongation: 22%

Cold‑rolled sheet/coil
Minimum yield strength: 310 MPa (45 ksi)
Tensile strength: 450 MPa (65 ksi)
Minimum elongation: 22%
For thinner gauges commonly used in landscape and architectural panels (typically 1.5 mm to 6 mm), the actual elongation in production is often higher than 22%, usually between 24% and 28%, which provides excellent ductility for bending, rolling, and forming complex shapes without cracking.
What this elongation means
A minimum 22% elongation means ASTM A606‑2 achieves a good balance between:
High strength (for structural performance)
Sufficient ductility (for fabrication and forming)
This makes it suitable for curved panels, folded components, retaining wall panels, planters, sculptures, and other formed landscape elements while maintaining structural stability.
