H-beam steel is an economical high-efficiency profile with an optimized cross-sectional area distribution and a more reasonable strength-to-weight ratio. Its cross-section resembles the English letter "H," hence the name.
Since all parts of H-beam steel are arranged at right angles, it offers excellent bending resistance in all directions, simple construction, cost savings, and a lightweight structure, making it widely used in construction.
H-beams are divided into hot-rolled H-beams and welded H-beams (H-type). Hot-rolled H-beams are further classified into wide-flange H-beams (HW), medium-flange H-beams (HM), and narrow-flange H-beams (HN).
HW: H-beams with roughly equal height and flange width, typically used as core columns in reinforced concrete frame structures, also called stiff steel columns. Typical dimensions: height 200–900 mm, flange width 200–900 mm, weight 50–200 kg/m, yield strength 235–355 MPa.
HM: H-beams with a height-to-flange width ratio of about 1.33–1.75, mainly used in steel structures as frame columns that bear dynamic loads, such as equipment platforms. Typical dimensions: height 250–900 mm, flange width 150–400 mm, weight 40–180 kg/m.
HN: H-beams with a height-to-flange width ratio greater than or equal to 2, suitable for long-span beams or specialized structural requirements. Typical dimensions: height 300–900 mm, flange width 100–300 mm, weight 35–160 kg/m.
