I. Characteristics and Landscape Compatibility of Corten Steel
Corten steel (also known as atmospheric corrosion resistant steel) is a special type of steel formed by adding alloying elements such as copper and phosphorus. Its most prominent characteristic is that it forms a dense rust layer when exposed to the natural environment, thus preventing further corrosion. According to the American ASTM A588 standard, the corrosion resistance of weathering steel can reach 2-8 times that of ordinary carbon steel, and it requires no painting or maintenance. In flower bed and garden retaining wall applications, its advantages are:
- 1. Durability: After long-term exposure, the rust layer thickness is only 0.05-0.1mm.
- 2. Ecological: The rust color blends naturally with the soil and plants, reducing the need for artificial modification.
- 3. Load-bearing capacity: Tensile strength ≥485MPa, capable of supporting retaining walls up to 1.5m in height.

II. Construction Technology and Design Considerations
(I) Foundation Structure Design
- Thickness Selection: When the retaining wall height is ≤0.6m, the recommended plate thickness is 3-5mm; for heights of 0.6-1.5m, it needs to be increased to 6-10mm, and horizontal reinforcing ribs should be added.
- Drainage Treatment: Drainage holes (30-50mm in diameter, spaced 1-1.5m apart) must be reserved to prevent water pressure from damaging the stability of the rust layer.
(II) Optimized Installation Process
- 1. After compacting the foundation, lay a gravel layer (100-150mm thick);
- 2. Fix the panels using welding or bolts, ensuring the joints are waterproofed;
- 3. Accelerated Rusting: Spray with a 5% sodium chloride solution (once a week for one month) to promote uniform rust formation.

III. Maintenance and Economic Comparison
Compared to traditional stone or concrete retaining walls, Corten steel has an initial cost that is approximately 20%-30% higher, but saves over 60% on later maintenance costs. Daily maintenance only requires removing accumulated leaves to prevent prolonged dampness and accelerated localized corrosion.

IV. Innovative Application Cases
- 1. Hollow-out Carving: Create plant patterns using laser cutting, combining functionality and artistry;
- 2. Modular Design: Prefabricated Corten steel boxes filled with soil for planting, enabling movable flower bed designs.
