Product Introduction

ASTM A709 Corten Steel Plate is a structural steel standard developed by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), widely used in highway bridges, railway bridges, architectural steel structures, and heavy machinery manufacturing.
The Astm A709 corten plate series includes both carbon steel and high-strength low-alloy (HSLA) steel grades. The W-grade (Weathering Steel) variant is alloyed with copper (Cu), chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), and other elements to form a stable, dense oxide layer on the steel surface when exposed to the atmosphere.
This protective rust patina significantly improves atmospheric corrosion resistance, reduces maintenance requirements, and ensures long-term durability.
As a result, A709 high strength corten plate is ideal for structures requiring superior strength, excellent corrosion resistance, and long service life in demanding environments.

Features

High Strength Performance
Multiple strength grades available, with yield strength up to 70 ksi (485 MPa), meeting diverse structural load requirements.
Superior Weather Resistance
As an Astm A709 weathering steel plate, it naturally forms a protective rust layer that prevents further corrosion even in harsh atmospheric conditions.
Excellent Workability
Supports welding, riveting, and bolted connections, as well as easy cutting and forming into various shapes, including Astm A709 corten sheet formats.
Structural Safety & Cost Efficiency
High strength allows for lighter structural sections, reducing material weight while maintaining safety and lowering construction costs.
Applications

. Bridge Engineering
Highway and railway bridges, cable-stayed bridges, and sea-crossing bridges requiring durable A709 Rusty Steel Plate structures.
· Weather-Exposed Steel Structures
Long-term atmospheric exposure projects where Astm A709 corten plate offers superior corrosion resistance.
· Heavy Machinery
Cranes, pressure vessels, and high-rise building frameworks requiring A709 high strength corten plate.
· Port & Marine Engineering
Port machinery, dock structures, and offshore platforms in high-salinity environments
The Astm A709 corten plate series combines high strength, outstanding weathering resistance, excellent workability, and cost efficiency.
Whether as A709 high strength corten plate for heavy-duty structures,
Astm A709 weathering steel plate for bridges, or A709 Rusty Steel Plate for aesthetic and architectural projects, this material ensures long-lasting performance in even the harshest environmental conditions.
Its versatility also extends to Astm A709 corten sheet applications for lightweight yet durable designs.

What is A709 grade 50 material?
The ASTM A709-50W structural steel product grade is a high-strength low alloy (HSLA) steel that demonstrates atmospheric corrosion resistance better than many steels with a corrosion index of 6.0 and higher, while providing a minimum tensile strength of 70 ksi.
What is the equivalent of ASTM A709 Grade 50?
Comparasion for chemical composition and mechanical properties,Q345qC steel in chinese specifications shall be the best equivalent to A709 Gr 50 steel materials. Q345qC steel also application in bridge buildings and can resist certain atmospheric corrosion when bare and unpainting.
What is ASTM A709 grade 50W weathering steel?
ASTM A709-50W covers high strength, low allow steel structural shapes, plates and bars. The atmospheric corrosion resistance of this steel in most environments is substantially better than carbon steel with or without copper addition. ASTM A709-50W shall have an atmospheric corrosion index of 6.00 or higher.
What is ASTM A709 specification?
The ASTM A709 is the Standard Specification for Structural Steel for Bridges and encompasses carbon, high-strength low-alloy, and quenched and tempered alloy steels used as structural plates in the construction of bridges. SSAB offers the following five grades of A709; 36, 50, 50W, HPS 50W and HPS 70W.
