1. Apply a transparent protective coating (most effective & common)
Once the surface forms a stable dark brown patina, spray or brush a transparent finish to seal it:
Transparent acrylic varnish
Transparent polyurethane (PU) topcoat
Special weathering steel protective oil
Effect:
Isolates rain, salt spray, dust, and UV
Stops further color darkening
Prevents rust streaks and discoloration
Maintains a consistent matte brown color for many years

2. Regular gentle cleaning
Rinse with clean water regularly to remove dust, sand, and dirt
Avoid strong acid/alkali cleaners
Do not use hard brushes to scrub (damages patina)
Effect:
Avoids uneven corrosion caused by dirt accumulation
Keeps color uniform
3. Improve drainage and avoid long‑term water retention
Ensure the sign surface is sloped to allow rainwater to flow away
Avoid gaps or recesses where water can accumulate
Install simple baffles if installed in a damp location
Effect:
Prevents light‑colored water stains and dark corrosion spots
Maintains overall color consistency

4. Prevent contact with dissimilar metals
Avoid direct contact with iron, copper, aluminum, or stainless steel fixtures
Use rubber or nylon gaskets between different metals
Effect:
Avoids galvanic corrosion that causes local discoloration or black spots
5. Periodic re‑coating (long‑term maintenance)
Transparent coatings age over 3–5 years and become yellow or cracked
Lightly clean the surface then reapply a thin transparent topcoat
Effect:
Long‑term stable color and appearance for more than 10 years
6. Keep away from strong corrosive environments
Avoid prolonged exposure to chemical fumes, acid rain, high‑concentration salt spray, or cement/alkali splashing
Effect:
Prevents the patina from being damaged and turning white, black, or mottled
