Step 1: Measure Your Project
Measure the total meterage required for the project.
Take note of:
Straight garden beds (in meters)
Curved garden beds (in meters)
Number of garden beds required
This information is essential to calculate how many spikes/joiners you will need.

Spikes/Joiners Calculation:
Straight beds: 2 spikes/joiners per length + 1 extra per bed
Example: 25m of straight edging = 10 lengths → 20 spikes + 1 extra per bed
1 bed = 21 spikes
2 beds = 22 spikes
Curved beds: 3 spikes/joiners per length + 1 extra per bed
Step 2: Prepare the Ground
Mark out the garden beds using a hose for straight or curved lines.
For large curves or circles, use a stake and builder's string, then mark with spray paint for a clean curve.
Dig a shallow trench, 30–50mm below grass level, where the garden edging will sit. This prevents grass from growing through the beds.
Step 3: Position the Edging
Lay out your Corten steel garden edging along the trench.
Place spikes/joiners:
Straight beds: 1 in the middle and at each join
Curved beds: 2 in the middle and at each join
Ensure holes are visible; edging will be placed on top of the spikes/joiners.
Tip: You don't have to screw the edging into the spikes/joiners-pre-drilled holes are provided if you choose to secure them using 8g 25mm galvanized wafer head screws.
Step 4: Fix the Edging
Place the edging on top of the spikes/joiners, aligning the holes as accurately as possible. Minor adjustments can be made during installation.
Hammer the edging down to your desired height using:
A rubber mallet or
A steel hammer with a piece of timber to avoid denting the top.
Step 5: Shape Corners and Curves
For square corners, cut a triangle section from the overlap.
To create custom curves, use a straight piece of timber or steel to bend the edging to the desired degree.
Handy Tips
Use a hose to mark large beds to simplify measurement.
Daily or bi-daily wetting of new Corten steel can accelerate the rust patina, especially in the first 1–2 weeks.
