Mild indoor/urban environments (low humidity, no salt spray or industrial pollution): The patina of weathering steel planters will form a dense protective layer within 6–12 months, and no active maintenance is needed for 2–3 years. Only occasional visual inspections are required to check for surface scratches or loose rust caused by external collisions.
Outdoor rural/suburban environments: Annual simple maintenance is recommended. This mainly includes removing accumulated dust, fallen leaves, or soil residues on the planter surface with a soft brush or clean cloth to prevent these substances from trapping moisture and causing localized pitting corrosion.
Harsh environments (coastal salt spray areas, industrial zones with sulfur dioxide, high-humidity areas): Semi-annual or annual regular maintenance is necessary. Chloride ions and industrial pollutants will accelerate the degradation of the patina, so it is necessary to rinse the surface with clean water every 6–12 months to remove salt deposits or chemical residues, and then dry it thoroughly. If local loose rust appears, touch up the area with weathering steel-specific breathable paint in a timely manner.

Soil and fertilizers often contain moisture, organic acids, or chemical salts, which can seep into the inner wall of the planter and cause corrosion if the planter lacks a drainage structure. Therefore, the core maintenance work is to check the drainage holes every 6 months: clear blockages caused by soil particles to ensure smooth water drainage and avoid stagnant water accumulating at the bottom of the planter.
If the planter is used to grow acid-loving plants (e.g., rhododendrons, camellias) with acidic soil, the corrosion risk of the inner wall will increase. It is recommended to line the inner wall with a breathable geotextile fabric to isolate the soil from direct contact with the steel surface, which can reduce maintenance frequency.

Check the welding seams or connection parts of the planter annually. These areas are prone to stress concentration and crevice corrosion. If rust or cracks are found at the joints, polish the area and apply a rust stabilizer or touch-up paint to prevent corrosion from spreading.
Avoid moving the planter frequently, as friction during movement may damage the surface patina. If relocation is necessary, pad the bottom with soft materials to reduce scratches.
