1. Why Drainage Is Critical for Weathering Steel Planters
For plant health: Stagnant water in the planter causes root rot, oxygen deprivation, and nutrient leaching-especially for plants that prefer well-drained soil (e.g., succulents, herbs, ornamental grasses).
For steel durability: Accumulated moisture inside the planter penetrates the patina layer over time, leading to localized pitting corrosion and loosening of the protective oxide layer. In coastal or humid areas, stagnant water mixed with salt or soil contaminants will further speed up steel degradation.

2. Drainage Design Requirements (Built-in During Manufacturing)
Drainage holes: Drill 5–10 mm diameter holes at the bottom edge of the planter (not the center, to avoid blocking when placed on the ground). The number depends on size:
Small planters (≤0.5m width): 2–4 holes.
Medium/large planters (>0.5m width): 6–10 holes, evenly distributed along the lowest perimeter.
Slope design: Add a 2–5° slope to the inner bottom of the planter, directing water toward the drainage holes to prevent pooling.
Elevation support: Place the planter on 316 stainless steel feet (10–15 cm height) to keep the bottom away from the ground-this ensures water can flow out freely and avoids contact with damp soil.

3. Regular Drainage Maintenance (Routine Care)
Clear blockages monthly: Use a small brush or wooden stick to remove soil, root debris, or mulch that clogs the drainage holes. Clogged holes are the most common cause of water accumulation.
Flush the planter quarterly: Rinse the inner bottom with fresh water to wash away accumulated soil particles and salt deposits (critical for coastal planters).
Check for drainage efficiency after heavy rain: After downpours, confirm that water drains out quickly without pooling inside the planter. If pooling occurs, add more drainage holes or clear existing ones immediately.
