Factors that affect the formation rate of the natural patina layer on SPA‑H weathering steel
The formation speed of a stable, dense patina depends mainly on environmental conditions, material composition, surface condition, and structural design. Key factors include:
Atmospheric humidity and rainfall
Moderate humidity (60–80%) and regular wet‑dry cycles significantly accelerate patina formation.
High humidity promotes surface oxidation, while periodic drying helps densify the oxide layer.
Dry, arid climates slow the reaction dramatically.

Temperature and solar exposure
Warm, mild temperatures (10–30°C) speed up chemical reactions between the steel surface and air/moisture.
Strong UV radiation and adequate sunlight help oxidize and stabilize the patina.
Extremely low or high temperatures reduce reaction rates and delay full patina formation.

Atmospheric composition (pollutants and salt spray)
Mild levels of industrial pollutants (SO₂, dust) can accelerate early oxidation and patina maturation.
Low‑concentration salt spray (mild coastal areas) promotes faster patina formation.
However, excessively high salt or heavy acid pollution causes uneven, loose rust instead of stable patina.

Surface condition before exposure
Clean, scale‑free surfaces (e.g., after Sa2.5 blast cleaning) form patina much faster than mill‑scale or oily surfaces.
Rough, properly profiled surfaces improve oxide adhesion and speed up uniform coverage.
Contaminants (oil, grease, dust) block contact between steel and air, slowing patina growth.
Ventilation and drainage
Good ventilation and free drainage prevent persistent wetness and ensure uniform oxidation.
Trapped moisture, shaded areas, or enclosed gaps lead to slow, uneven patina or persistent loose rust.

Alloy content and material consistency
SPA‑H's controlled levels of Cu, Cr, Ni, and P directly determine how quickly a dense patina forms.
Consistent chemistry ensures uniform and predictable patina development across the surface.
Exposure orientation and sheltering
Fully exposed, vertical surfaces form patina fastest and most evenly.
Horizontal, sheltered, or frequently shaded areas develop patina much slower and less uniformly.
