1. Difference in Chemical Composition
Weathering steel, often referred to as Corten steel, contains specific alloying elements such as copper, chromium, nickel, and phosphorus. These elements allow the steel to form a protective patina when exposed to the atmosphere. In contrast, mild steel is primarily composed of iron and carbon, with very limited alloy content. As a result, mild steel lacks inherent corrosion resistance and relies heavily on external coatings for protection.

Weathering steel forms a stable rust layer that adheres tightly to the surface and slows down further corrosion.
