The patina on ASTM A588 signage panels can be removed, modified, or artificially adjusted, but you must understand that it will re‑form naturally over time unless protected by a coating.
1. Can the patina be removed?
Yes.Common methods to remove the existing patina:
Wire brushing / sanding (physically remove surface oxide)
Sandblasting / shot blasting (clean back to bare metal)
Acid cleaning / pickling (chemically strip the rust layer)
But once returned to bare steel, new rust and patina will quickly re‑develop when exposed outdoors.

2. Can the patina be altered or controlled?
Yes - both color and texture can be adjusted.
Artificial patination chemicalsSpeed up maturation and create uniform:
Dark brown
Reddish‑brown
Chocolate brown
Mechanical texturingBrush, grind, or etch before patination to create different surface effects.
Sealers / clear coatingsApply a transparent topcoat to lock the current color and stop further change.

3. What happens if you remove or change it?
If left uncoated: the surface will re‑rust and eventually return to a natural dark brown patina.
If coated (clear lacquer, epoxy, polyurethane):the patina appearance is permanently fixed and will no longer evolve.
4. Practical use for signage
For signs, people often:
Use pre‑patinated panels for consistent color on installation.
Apply a clear sealer to keep the desired look long‑term.
