1. Apply a transparent weather-resistant sealant
Use acrylic, polyurethane, or fluorocarbon clear coat specially designed for weathering steel.
The coating locks in the mature patina color, prevents further darkening, and stops rust runoff.
Reapply every 3–5 years to maintain protective and color-stabilizing effects.
2. Control the environment to avoid discoloration
Keep the surface well-ventilated and dry to prevent uneven darkening or black streaks.
Avoid long-term shading, which causes dull, patchy color.
Keep away from soil, wood, concrete, and moss that trap moisture and cause local discoloration.
3. Prevent salt and chemical pollution
In coastal or deicing salt areas, regularly wash surface salt deposits with clean water.
Avoid contact with acids, alkalis, fertilizers, and industrial chemicals that corrode and discolor the patina.
Prevent contact with dissimilar metals to avoid galvanic corrosion and color spots.

4. Optimize structural design for uniform color
Design slopes to ensure good drainage and avoid water retention.
Eliminate crevices, lap joints, and closed gaps where moisture and dirt accumulate.
Maintain proper spacing between steel components for air circulation.
5. Regular cleaning and maintenance
Gently rinse surface dust, dirt, and mold with low-pressure water every 6–12 months.
Do not use strong acids, alkalis, or hard brushes that damage the patina.
Promptly repair scratches or damaged areas to prevent local rusting and color inconsistency.
6. Avoid high-temperature exposure
Keep Q500NH away from heat sources, flues, and long-term high-temperature radiation.
Temperatures above 250°C destroy the stable patina and cause discoloration, scaling, and reddish staining.

7. Avoid mechanical damage to the patina
Prevent heavy impacts, scratches, and grinding on the formed surface.
The natural dense patina is the base of stable color; once damaged, the color will become uneven.
8. Use pre-formed patina treatment
Use professional artificial accelerated patina before installation.
This allows the steel to reach the desired dark brown color early and reduces subsequent natural color change.
