What Is Corten Grade A?
Corten Grade A, also referred to under ASTM A242 Type 1 and commonly grouped within ASTM A588 weathering steel, is a high-strength, low-alloy structural steel renowned for its excellent resistance to atmospheric corrosion.
When exposed to outdoor conditions, Corten A forms a stable, protective oxide film-often called a patina. This patina appears as a rust-like surface but functions as a natural shield, preventing further corrosion from penetrating the material.
Because of this self-protecting characteristic, Corten A is widely used in bridges, architectural façades, building structures, landscape features, outdoor sculptures, and industrial components.
Its ability to withstand moisture, pollution, varying temperatures, and cyclic weather exposure significantly lowers maintenance requirements over its service life.
This combination of durability, reduced maintenance cost, and visually striking appearance makes Corten A popular in both structural and aesthetic design environments.
