ASTM A709 Grade 50W Weathering Steel Plate

ASTM A709 Grade 50W is the weathering grade of the A709 bridge family: a high-strength, low-alloy steel with a minimum yield strength of 345 MPa that is intended for bridges, industrial plant, heavy construction and machinery that stay outdoors. Copper, chromium and nickel are added so that the surface forms a stable, protective rust layer instead of continuing to shed oxide, which allows the plate to serve unpainted and cuts the cost of access and repainting over the life of a structure.

Grade 50W is supplied as killed or semi-killed steel, so the chemical composition and the mechanical properties are uniform from heat to heat and through the thickness of the plate.

Key Properties and Chemical Composition

Property Requirement
Minimum yield strength 345 MPa
Tensile strength 485-620 MPa
Elongation 18 % min
Charpy V-notch impact at minus 20 C 27 J min
Density 7.85 g/cm3
Service temperature range minus 40 C to plus 120 C
Element Content (%)
Carbon (C) 0.19 max
Manganese (Mn) 0.75-1.35
Phosphorus (P) 0.040 max
Sulfur (S) 0.050 max
Silicon (Si) 0.15-0.40
Copper (Cu) 0.20-0.40
Chromium (Cr) 0.40-0.65
Nickel (Ni) 0.25-0.50

The carbon limit keeps the plate weldable while the copper, chromium and nickel additions carry the corrosion resistance; that combination is the reason a 50W plate can be left bare where a plain carbon steel plate would need a coating.

Weathering Performance and Service Life

Accelerated atmospheric corrosion testing: 0.05 mm/year or less in moderate environments

Protective rust layer formation: 6-36 months, depending on humidity, temperature and pollution

Service life without painting: 50-100 years in suitable open exposure

Maintenance saving against coated carbon steel: up to 80 % less repainting over the service life

Those figures assume good detailing. The oxide layer only compacts where the steel wets and dries in cycles, so members must drain freely, and water must not be allowed to sit in pockets, joints or against concrete. In continuously damp or chloride-saturated conditions the plate should be protected like any other structural steel.

The A709 Weathering Family: 50W, HPS 50W, HPS 70W and 100W

ASTM A709 publishes its weathering grades as 50W, HPS 50W, HPS 70W, 100W and HPS 100W. There is no separately listed Grade 70W plate: the 70 ksi weathering grade appears in the standard as HPS 70W, the high-performance version, with a minimum yield strength of 485 MPa and a tensile range of 570-720 MPa. Likewise the 100W and HPS 100W members of the family are quenched-and-tempered, 690 MPa yield class steels for heavily loaded bridge members rather than as-rolled plate.

Compared with Grade 50, the plain non-weathering bridge grade, 50W keeps the same 345 MPa minimum yield strength but adds the alloy package that delivers atmospheric corrosion resistance and a longer unpainted service life.

Applications in Bridges and Outdoor Structures

Bridge girders, deck plates and supports in marine or industrial atmospheres

Highway and railway bridges where repainting would be disruptive and expensive

Industrial plant, heavy construction equipment and machinery housings

Unpainted load-bearing structures, rail wagons and container frames exposed to the weather

Grade 50W plate is supplied cut and edge-prepared to drawings with heat-level mill test certificates reporting the impact energy, chemical composition and mechanical properties, so fabricators can release the material straight into a bridge package.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is ASTM A709 Grade 50W steel?
It is the weathering steel grade of the bridge specification, covering high-strength low-alloy plate, shapes and bars with a minimum yield strength of 345 MPa and a stable protective rust layer for unpainted service.

Q: How does 50W differ from A709 Grade 50?
Both require a 345 MPa minimum yield strength. Grade 50W adds copper, chromium and nickel, so it resists atmospheric corrosion far better and can be left unpainted, while plain Grade 50 needs a coating system.

Q: Is there an ASTM A709 Grade 70W?
The standard does not list a separate Grade 70W plate. The 70 ksi weathering grade is published as HPS 70W, with a minimum yield strength of 485 MPa and a tensile range of 570-720 MPa.

Q: What is Grade 100W used for?
Grade 100W and HPS 100W are quenched-and-tempered weathering steels of the 690 MPa yield class, used where the highest strength and corrosion resistance are needed in the same member.

Q: How long does the protective rust layer take to form?
Six to thirty-six months is typical, depending on humidity, temperature and airborne pollution; after that the layer is stable and further loss of section is very slow.

Q: What impact toughness is required?
As a minimum, 27 J Charpy V-notch energy at minus 20 C, with higher or lower test temperatures specified where the bridge zone and climate demand them.
