Can S355J2W steel plate be used in marine environments?

S355J2W steel plate is not recommended for direct use in severe marine environments, but it can be applied in mild marine scenarios with targeted protective measures.

Limitations in Severe Marine Environments

S355J2W is a weathering steel grade optimized for atmospheric corrosion resistance in rural, suburban, or mild industrial areas. Marine environments are characterized by high concentrations of chloride ions (from salt spray, seawater splash, or tidal immersion), which can penetrate the steel's natural patina and cause pitting corrosion and crevice corrosion.

For areas within 1 km of the shore (high salt spray exposure) or tidal zones (direct seawater contact), the patina of S355J2W cannot form a sufficient barrier against chloride attack. This will lead to accelerated substrate corrosion, reducing the service life of the steel plate significantly.

Applicability in Mild Marine Scenarios + Protective Measures

S355J2W can be used in coastal areas more than 3 km away from the shore (low salt spray concentration) if the following protective measures are implemented:

Pre-patination treatment: Perform factory-controlled patination before installation to form a dense, uniform oxide layer that enhances resistance to salt spray.

Edge sealing: Apply a breathable anti-corrosion sealant to cut edges, welds, and other vulnerable areas to block chloride ion infiltration.

Structural design optimization: Avoid enclosed crevices or waterlogging structures; ensure good airflow around the steel plate to prevent moisture and salt accumulation.

Regular maintenance: Rinse the surface with fresh water every 1–2 months to remove salt deposits; repair damaged patina with a rust accelerator promptly.

Alternative for Severe Marine Environments

If direct use in tidal zones or high-salt marine areas is required, it is better to choose marine-grade stainless steel (e.g., 316L) or carbon steel with heavy-duty anti-corrosion coatings instead of S355J2W, as these materials have stronger chloride corrosion resistance.
