S355J2W weathering steel cladding can be used in coastal areas, but only in mild, low-salt-spray coastal zones - it is NOT suitable for heavy marine environments close to the shore.
1. Usable coastal conditions
Distance from the sea: generally more than 2–3 km from the coastline
Low salt-spray concentration, no direct sea wind erosion
Inland coastal plains, coastal cities with good air circulation
With good drainage, no long-term water retention on the surface
In these environments, it can still form a relatively stable patina and achieve a service life of 15–25 years.

2. Unusable (high-risk) coastal environments
Within 1 km of the coast, direct sea wind & salt spray
Areas with frequent salt fog, high chloride ion concentration
Low-lying, damp, poorly ventilated coastal locations
In such environments, chloride ions will destroy the dense patina layer, causing:
Uneven, loose rust
Pitting corrosion
Rapid perforation in severe cases

3. If you must use it near the coast
Do surface shot blasting + artificial accelerated patina
Apply a high-performance transparent anti-corrosion topcoat to isolate salt spray
Increase maintenance frequency and inspect regularly
