Forms a dense, tightly bonded physical isolation barrier
The mature patina is not a loose, flaking rust layer but a compact oxide film composed of stable iron oxides and alloy compounds (from Cu, Cr, Ni in ASTM A606's formulation). This film adheres metallurgically to the steel surface, creating an impenetrable physical barrier that blocks air, moisture, and mild atmospheric corrosive media (e.g., light dust, weak ambient acidity) from contacting the underlying base metal, fundamentally inhibiting the oxidation and corrosion of the steel substrate.

Drastically reduces the steel's corrosion rate for long-term durability
In normal temperate outdoor environments (e.g., urban parks, residential landscapes, mild coastal areas far from salt spray), the patina lowers ASTM A606's corrosion rate to an ultra-low ≤0.03mm per year. This slow corrosion speed ensures the base metal does not experience significant thinning or structural damage even after decades of outdoor exposure, maintaining the steel's mechanical strength and structural integrity for long-term use in sculptures, architectural elements, and outdoor installations.

Features inherent self-repairing ability to fix minor damage
A critical protective property of the patina is its self-repairing function: if the patina sustains minor scratches, wear, or small chips from accidental contact or light friction (exposing small areas of bare steel), the alloy-rich composition of ASTM A606 triggers a rapid natural weathering reaction at the damaged site. The exposed steel will form a new layer of patina over time, automatically repairing the protective barrier and preventing corrosion from spreading to the inner metal, without the need for manual repair or intervention.

Maintains stable protection in standard outdoor environments for life
Once fully matured, the patina's protective performance remains stable and long-lasting in all standard outdoor settings (excluding extreme harsh environments). No additional anti-corrosion coatings, paints, or rust-prevention treatments are required to sustain its protective effect-this passive protection is inherent to the patina and steel itself, making ASTM A606 a low-maintenance option for outdoor applications.

Acts as a foundational protection even in harsh environments
In extreme harsh conditions (e.g., high-salt coastal areas within 1km of the sea, heavy industrial zones with acid mist/dust), the patina still provides basic corrosion protection to the underlying metal. While it may need a supplementary UV-resistant transparent weathering steel sealer to enhance protection (preventing pitting corrosion and patina peeling), the patina remains the primary defensive layer and the sealer only reinforces its inherent effect, rather than replacing it.
