S355J2W weathering steel cladding with a mature, stable patina has very low maintenance requirements - it is designed to be nearly maintenance-free. Below are the only necessary upkeep steps to keep the patina intact and the color uniform:

1. Regular gentle cleaning

Rinse with clean water only every 6–12 months to remove dust, dirt, and leaves.

Use a soft cloth or soft brush; do not use steel wool, hard brushes, or high-pressure washing.

Avoid any acid, alkaline, or strong detergent - these will damage the patina.

2. Prevent water retention and rust streaks

Ensure the wall system has good drainage and ventilation.

Avoid gaps or recesses where rainwater can collect long-term.

Standing water is the main cause of uneven color and local corrosion.

3. Avoid contact with corrosive materials

Do not let cement, lime, soil, or wet timber touch the surface.

Isolate dissimilar metals (stainless steel, aluminum, copper) with rubber or nylon gaskets to prevent galvanic corrosion.

Keep away from chemical fumes, gasoline, oil, and de-icing salt.

4. Optional transparent protective coating (for color stability)

If you want to lock the color and prevent further darkening, apply a matte transparent acrylic or polyurethane topcoat.

Reapply every 3–5 years if coated.

If left uncoated, no coating maintenance is needed at all.

5. Inspect and repair minor damage

Check annually for scratches, loose patina, or pitting.

For small damaged areas: lightly clean → spot-treat with a small amount of accelerant → re-coat if needed.

Severe damage may require sanding and re-forming the patina locally.

6. Keep the surface exposed and ventilated

Do not cover the cladding long-term with advertising cloth, plants, or other materials.

A covered, damp surface will turn the patina powdery and uneven.
