How can the color change of Q355NH be controlled or modified during the rusting process?

Q355NH's color naturally goes from silver → yellow → orange → red → dark brown → stable chocolate brown over 6–18 months. This process can be controlled, accelerated, and fixed to get a uniform, desired appearance without random discoloration.

1. Control the color change speed & uniformity

Surface pretreatment

Sandblast / shotblast first → uniform roughness → even color.

Remove oil, dust, welding spatter → avoid patchy rust.

Control environment

Frequent wet‑dry cycles (water spray + air dry)→ speed up color change to dark brown in 1–3 months.

Keep good ventilation & sunlight→ avoid uneven dark/light patches.

Prevent long‑term damp or standing water→ avoids black, muddy rust.

Use patina accelerator

Commercial weathering steel color accelerator→ directly turns surface to medium/dark brown in days.

Main components: ferric salt, phosphating agent, oxidizing agent→ stable, even color without blotches.

2. Modify the final color

You can adjust Q355NH to these common colors:

Light golden brownEarly-stage patina, stop at 2–4 weeks.

Reddish brownMid-stage, natural outdoor exposure 2–5 months.

Dark chocolate brown (most popular)Mature stable patina, accelerated by chemicals.

Dark gray‑brownLong-term stable state, 1–2 years outdoors.

How to modify:

Use different formula accelerators to get darker/lighter tones.

Adjust spray times & drying time to control shade.

3. Fix the color permanently (stop further change)

Once you reach the desired color, lock it so it no longer changes:

Apply transparent weather-resistant sealer

Acrylic clear coat

Polyurethane clear coat

Fluorocarbon clear coat (best durability)

This stops color change, prevents rust runoff, and preserves appearance for years.

4. What causes bad color & how to avoid

Patchy black/red streaksCause: poor drainage, trapped moisture.Fix: improve ventilation, no water accumulation.

Bright orange that never darkensCause: dry climate, no wet‑dry cycles.Fix: periodic water spraying.

Uneven colorCause: inconsistent surface, oil contamination.Fix: sandblast before exposure.
