What Is ASTM A606 Corrosion-Resistant Steel Sheet?

ASTM A606 Corrosion-Resistant Steel Sheet is a high-strength, low-alloy hot-rolled or cold-rolled steel with improved atmospheric corrosion resistance.

When correctly exposed to alternating wet and dry conditions, the alloyed surface gradually develops a dense protective patina that slows further corrosion.

ASTM A606/A606M covers sheet and strip supplied in cut lengths or coils for structural and miscellaneous applications. The standard includes Type 2, Type 4 and Type 5;

ASTM A606 Type 4 weathering steel is a common choice for unpainted architectural, transportation and outdoor fabricated products.

ASTM A606 Weathering Steel Sheet Specification

ASTM A606 item Supply specification
Standard ASTM A606/A606M-25 or the edition stated in the order
Types Type 2, Type 4 and Type 5
Product form Hot-rolled/cold-rolled sheet and strip; cut lengths or coils
Typical thickness Cold rolled: 0.5–3.0 mm; hot rolled: 1.5–10.0 mm, subject to mill availability
Typical width 600–1,900 mm
Common cut sizes 1,219 × 2,438 mm, 1,250 × 2,500 mm and 1,500 × 3,000 mm
Surface Mill finish, pickled, blast-cleaned, pre-rusted or sealed pre-rusted

Under ASTM A606/A606M-25, hot-rolled cut lengths are covered at ordered thicknesses below 0.230 in. [6.0 mm], while hot-rolled coils may be supplied at 0.230 in. [6.0 mm] and above. Conventional thick structural plate should be checked against ASTM A588, A871 or the project specification.

ASTM A606 Corrosion-Resistant Steel Chemical Requirements

ASTM A606 specifies general chemical limits, while Type 4 and Type 5 use additional alloying elements to achieve superior atmospheric corrosion resistance. The exact Cu-Cr-Ni-Si-P alloy design may vary by mill, so the complete heat analysis should be checked on the MTC.

ASTM A606 chemical item Heat analysis Product analysis
Carbon, max. 0.22% 0.26%
Manganese, max. 1.25% 1.30%
Sulfur, max. 0.040% 0.060%
Type 4 corrosion-resistance index Minimum 6.0 according to ASTM Guide G101 Confirmed by mill chemistry calculation/documentation

ASTM A606 Weathering Steel Mechanical Properties

ASTM A606 condition Minimum yield strength Minimum tensile strength Minimum elongation
Hot rolled, as rolled 50 ksi [340 MPa] 70 ksi [480 MPa] 22%
Hot rolled, annealed/normalized 45 ksi [310 MPa] 65 ksi [450 MPa] 22%
Cold rolled 45 ksi [310 MPa] 65 ksi [450 MPa] 22%*

*For cold-rolled material not over approximately 1.1 mm, the referenced minimum elongation is 20%.

Pre-Rusted Corten Steel and Pre-Weathered Corten Steel refer to surface treatments; the substrate must still be certified as ASTM A606.

ASTM A606 inspection Available documentation
Material verification Heat number, grade and standard review
Chemical/mechanical tests Heat analysis and tensile results
Corrosion performance ASTM G101 corrosion-index evidence when required
Dimensional inspection Thickness, width, length, flatness and cut-part checks
Additional inspection PMI and SGS/BV third-party inspection by agreement

Each batch can be supplied with an EN 10204 3.1 MTC or an agreed mill test report. For welded parts, the welding procedure should consider actual chemistry, thickness, service temperature and required weathering appearance.

ASTM A606 Weathering Steel Sheet Applications

ASTM A606 sheet is widely used for architectural façades, roofing, wall panels, screens, fences, containers, railcars, signage, planters and light outdoor structures. It combines high strength, formability, outdoor durability and a natural rust-brown appearance.

Bare ASTM A606 should not automatically be used in continuously wet, buried, marine splash or heavy salt-exposure locations. Such environments may require coatings, improved drainage, corrosion allowance or another material.

ASTM A606 application Recommended supply form
Façades, screens and signage Laser-cut or perforated sheet; optional pre-rusting
Roofing and cladding Sheet or slit coil
Containers and railcars Hot-rolled sheet/coil
Planters and landscape products Cut, bent and welded sheet

ASTM A606 Steel Sheet Weight, Delivery and Inquiry

Theoretical weight is calculated as:

Weight (kg) = thickness (mm) × width (m) × length (m) × 7.85

ASTM A606 sheet size Approximate weight
1.5 × 1,219 × 2,438 mm 35.0 kg/sheet
2.0 × 1,250 × 2,500 mm 49.1 kg/sheet
3.0 × 1,500 × 3,000 mm 106.0 kg/sheet

Stock material may be prepared in about 7–15 days; mill or processed orders commonly require 20–40 days. FOB, CIF and DAP terms are available.
