Key Difference Between the Corten B and S355J0W Steel plate

May 06, 2026 Leave a message

Corten B and S355J0W steel plate are two widely specified grades in the weathering steel industry. While they originate from different standards-Corten B is commonly associated with the ASTM weathering steel family, while S355J0W is defined by the EN 10025-5 European standard-the two grades can be considered comparable for some structural and atmospheric weathering applications.

However, they should not be treated as directly interchangeable without checking the applicable standard, chemical composition, mechanical properties, impact requirements, and project specifications.

Technical Comparison of Corten B and S355J0W steel plate

Although they follow different naming systems, Corten B steel and S355J0W steel plate share similar strength levels and are both designed to develop a protective oxide layer, or patina, under suitable atmospheric exposure.

The key difference is that Corten B and S355J0W are not standard-to-standard equivalents. S355J0W is an EN 10025-5 weathering steel grade with a specified impact toughness requirement, while Corten B follows the requirements of its applicable ASTM weathering-steel specification. Material selection should therefore be based on the project standard rather than strength alone.

Chemical Composition Analysis (Max %)

Element Corten B S355J0W (EN 10025-5)
Carbon (C) 0.16 0.19
Manganese (Mn) 0.80 - 1.25 0.45 - 1.60
Phosphorus (P) 0.030 0.040
Sulphur (S) 0.030 0.040
Silicon (Si) 0.30 - 0.50 0.55
Chromium (Cr) 0.40 - 0.65 0.35 - 0.85
Copper (Cu) 0.25 - 0.40 0.20 - 0.60
Nickel (Ni) 0.40 -
Vanadium (V) 0.02 - 0.10 -

Note: The values above should be treated as representative specification values and checked against the applicable material standard and mill certificate for the ordered product. Ni and V are characteristic additions in the Corten B composition shown above, while S355J0W does not have mandatory Ni/V requirements in the same way.

For weldability, the carbon equivalent value (CEV) should also be considered. For S355J0W, the applicable EN 10025-5 requirements should be checked according to plate thickness; for t ≤16 mm, the CEV limit is typically ≤0.52% under the referenced requirement.

Mechanical Properties

Grade Yield Strength (MPa Min) Tensile Strength (MPa)
Corten B steel 355 470 - 630
S355J0W steel 355 470 - 630

Both grades can provide a minimum yield strength of 355 MPa in the referenced product range, making them suitable for structural steel applications requiring atmospheric corrosion resistance.

However, the mechanical strength similarity does not mean that the two grades are fully equivalent. S355J0W has a J0 impact toughness requirement of at least 27 J at 0°C, while Corten B does not automatically have the same mandatory CVN requirement under the commonly referenced ASTM weathering-steel system. For low-temperature or impact-sensitive structures, the impact requirement should therefore be checked separately.

Delivery Condition

The delivery condition should also be specified when ordering weathering steel plate. Depending on the applicable standard, thickness, and production specification, the steel may be supplied in a normalized/normalized rolled or other specified rolling condition.

The actual delivery condition should be confirmed on the material specification and mill test certificate rather than assumed from the grade designation alone.

Why Choose S355J0W Steel or Corten B Steel?

1. Advanced Welding Performance and Versatility

The S355 weathering series is engineered with controlled alloy content and a suitable carbon equivalent, which supports good weldability when appropriate welding procedures are used. These grades can be processed using industrial welding methods including MIG/MAG (GMAW), TIG (GTAW), and Submerged Arc Welding (SAW).

Because welding can affect the corrosion behavior of the joint, the welding consumable should be compatible with the weathering-steel composition. Weathering-grade consumables with appropriate Cu/Cr/Ni alloying should be selected according to the base-metal grade and applicable welding procedure.

The original recommendation of welding consumables containing approximately 1% Ni and 0.5% Cu should be regarded as an industry recommendation rather than a universal requirement. The actual consumable should be selected according to the steel grade, welding process, joint design, service environment, and applicable welding specification.

Thermal Management: For plates exceeding 20 mm, preheating of approximately 100–150°C may be recommended to reduce hydrogen-related cold-cracking risk. This temperature range is an engineering recommendation, and the actual preheat and interpass temperatures should be determined according to plate thickness, restraint, hydrogen level, welding consumable, ambient conditions, and the qualified welding procedure.

2. High-Precision Cutting and Edge Quality

Whether the project requires intricate decorative patterns or massive structural girders, the S355 weathering series responds well to thermal cutting. The material's composition and structural characteristics allow clean cutting when appropriate parameters are selected.

Laser & Plasma Cutting: For thinner sheets used in architectural façades, fiber laser cutting can provide high dimensional accuracy. For thicker structural plates, high-definition plasma cutting provides a balance of cutting speed and edge quality.

Flame (Oxy-Fuel) Cutting: For heavy-duty plates, flame cutting can also be used when the thickness and project requirements are appropriate. Cutting parameters should be controlled to minimize excessive heat-affected areas and subsequent grinding requirements.

3. Superior Forming and Structural Fabrication

Despite its high yield strength of 355 MPa, this steel family provides good ductility and can be used for industrial bending, rolling, and folding when the appropriate forming parameters are applied.

Cold Bending Logic: Due to its higher strength compared with ordinary mild steel, S355 weathering steel may require greater forming force and an appropriate minimum bend radius to control springback and prevent surface cracking.

Fabrication Reliability: Once formed, the steel can be used for structural and architectural components where dimensional accuracy and atmospheric corrosion resistance are required, including container structures, railway wagons, and large-scale public art.

The J0 toughness designation of S355J0W provides a specified impact-toughness requirement at 0°C, which should be considered when the structure will experience low-temperature service conditions.

Typical Applications of S355J0W Weathering Steel

Architectural Facades: Creating the classic weathered-steel appearance while providing atmospheric corrosion resistance.

Infrastructure: Railway wagons, freight containers, highway bridges, and other exposed structural applications where the applicable design standard permits weathering steel.

Energy & Offshore: Structures exposed to humidity and salinity where weathering-steel use is technically suitable. In severe marine or continuously wet environments, additional corrosion protection may be required.

Choosing between Corten B steel plate and S355J0W weathering steel plate depends on the applicable material standard, required mechanical and impact properties, environmental exposure, thickness, welding requirements, delivery condition, and project specifications.

S355J0W should not be considered an ASTM A572 Grade 50 weathering equivalent simply because the two grades have similar yield strength.

What is the American equivalent of S355J0?

ASTM A572 Grade 50: This is a common equivalent to S355J0 in terms of mechanical properties and usage in construction and structural applications. ASTM A36: While A36 has lower mechanical properties than S355J0, it can sometimes be used as an equivalent in less demanding applications.

What grade of steel is S355J0?

S355J0 is a non-alloy structural steel grade defined by the EN 10025-2 standard. The "S" denotes "structural," indicating its use in constructing buildings, machinery, or infrastructure.

Can S355 be hardened?

S355 is not ideally suited to hardening, though it can be subjected to limited heat treatment process such as case hardening. When hardening S355 heat treatment temperatures, including rate of heating, cooling and soaking times will vary due to factors such as the shape and size of each component.

Can S355 be welded?

S355 structural steel, widely used in offshore, shipbuild- ing, and construction industries, is known for its excellent weld- ability and durability [1], as well as for its corrosion and fatigue characteristics.
