What Surface Finish Is Recommended Before Installation?
1. Mill Finish for Natural Weathering Projects
For projects that prefer a natural patina development, weathering steel can be installed with a standard mill finish. This surface condition allows the steel to react directly with the environment and form its protective oxide layer over time. It is commonly selected for bridges, large-scale structures, and infrastructure projects where natural aging is desired.

2. Shot Blasted or Sandblasted Finish for Uniform Patina
A shot-blasted or sandblasted surface is often recommended when improved color uniformity is required. Removing mill scale and surface contaminants accelerates patina formation and promotes a more even appearance. This finish also enhances adhesion if pre-weathering or stabilizing treatments are applied before installation.

3. Pre-Weathered Finish for Aesthetic Control
For architectural applications with strict visual requirements, pre-weathered finishes are an excellent option. The patina is partially or fully developed in a controlled environment prior to delivery, allowing consistent color, reduced runoff, and immediate visual impact upon installation.

4. Stabilized or Sealed Surface for Clean Performance
In sensitive environments, such as public spaces or interior-adjacent installations, a stabilized or sealed surface may be recommended. This treatment locks in the patina, minimizes dusting and staining, and maintains the steel's appearance while preserving its long-term corrosion resistance.
