RE800W ultra-high strength weathering steel and JIS G3125 SPA-H weathering steel are both relevant to container manufacturing, but they are developed for different strength and processing requirements.
RE800W is an 800 MPa-class, thin-gauge hot-rolled weathering steel developed using Endless Strip Production (ESP) technology. Its main application direction is lightweight container manufacturing, where higher-strength steel may allow thinner structural panels.
SPA-H is a hot-rolled atmospheric corrosion-resistant steel specified under JIS G3125. It has a minimum yield strength of 355 MPa and a minimum tensile strength of 490 MPa, making it suitable for container panels and fabricated components designed to these requirements.

The main consideration when choosing between RE800W and SPA-H is whether the project requires conventional weathering steel or a higher-strength, lightweight structural design.

How Much Weight Can RE800W Save in Container Manufacturing?
One of the main reasons to evaluate RE800W weathering steel for lightweight containers is the potential reduction in steel sheet thickness.
For example, consider a theoretical container panel measuring 1180 mm wide and 6000 mm long. Using a nominal steel density of 7850 kg/m³, the panel mass can be calculated for different thicknesses.
Illustrative calculation only; the thicknesses below are design scenarios, not confirmed SPA-H-to-RE800W substitution specifications.

For this example, changing the panel thickness from 2.0 mm to 1.2 mm reduces the theoretical panel mass by 44.47 kg, or 40%.
This calculation demonstrates the potential value of thin-gauge high-strength steel. However, it does not establish that 1.2 mm RE800W can directly replace 2.0 mm SPA-H. Such replacement requires structural strength, buckling, fatigue, forming, and welding verification.

RE800W vs SPA-H: Forming, Welding and Coating
For container manufacturers, steel performance must be considered alongside production requirements, including bending, corrugation forming, welding, and coating.
Under JIS G3125:2021, SPA-H steel sheets and strips with a thickness of 6 mm or less are subject to a 180° bending test, normally using an inside radius of 0.5 times the material thickness under the specified test conditions.
RE800W has demonstrated processing feasibility in the 53-foot container trial, but its higher strength class requires careful evaluation of bending radius, springback, tooling loads, welding parameters, and coating compatibility.
Container manufacturers considering RE800W should carry out forming and welding trials before full-scale production, particularly when replacing an existing steel grade.
RE800W or SPA-H: Which Is Better for Container Manufacturing?
For conventional container manufacturing, SPA-H provides established JIS G3125 mechanical properties and chemical composition requirements. It can be specified for container panels and fabricated components where these properties satisfy structural design needs.
For lightweight container manufacturing, RE800W offers an alternative direction through its 800 MPa-class strength positioning and demonstrated 1.2 mm thin-gauge production.
However, increasing the steel strength does not automatically permit a proportional reduction in thickness. Container panels must still satisfy requirements for local buckling resistance, stiffness, fatigue, forming, welding, and corrosion protection.

RE800W is most relevant to container projects where weight reduction is a design objective and the manufacturer can perform the necessary engineering validation.
